Amphibien & Reptilien
Die Sektion Herpetologie befasst sich mit Amphibien und Reptilien aus der ganzen Welt, vorwiegend jedoch aus dem europäischen, afrikanischen, südamerikanischen, vorderasiatischen und südostasiatischen Raum.
Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in den Bereichen Taxonomie, Diversität, Aut-/Synökologie, Makro-Ökologie, Artenschutz, Biogeographie, Species Distribution Modelling, Evolution und Phylogenetik.
Die ständig anwachsende und derzeit bereits > 110.000 Exemplare umfassende wissenschaftliche Sammlung wird betreut von PD Dr. Dennis Rödder und Dr. Claudia Koch.
Beide Kuratoren engagieren sich in der universitären Lehre und bieten z. B. Seminare, Blockmodule und Exkursionen für die Studiengänge BSc Biologie und OEP MSc an der Universität Bonn an. Abschlussarbeiten (Bachelor/Master) sowie Promotionsarbeiten werden ebenfalls betreut.
Innovative Methoden in Morphologie, Taxonomie und Systematik
Weltweit werden jährlich mehrere hundert Amphibien- und Reptilienarten neu beschrieben. Das LIB leistet hierzu einen wichtigen Beitrag, in unserer Sektion wurden seit ihrer Gründung Typusmaterial von mehr als 700 Taxa hinterlegt, darunter über 350 Primärtypen (also Holo-, Lecto- und Neotypen) und knapp 100 Syntypen. Zur Indentifzierung neuer Arten nutzen wir modernste Techniken der Molekularbiologie (Genetik, Genomik, Phylogenetik), sowie computergestützte bildgebende Verfahren wie µCT-basierte 3D Rekonstruktionen.
Computergestützte Analysen in Biogeographie, Evolutionsökologie und Naturschutzforschung
Wir untersuchen die Auswirkungen von Klima- und Landnutzungsänderungen auf verschiedenen Zeitskalen, von derzeit beobachtbaren Verbreitungsverschiebungen und eher kurzfristigen Verbreitungsdynamiken von (invasiven) Arten (einige Jahre bis Jahrzehnte) bis hin zu evolutionären Anpassungen während der Artbildung (mehrere Millionen Jahre). Amphibien und Reptilien eignen sich hierzu besonders, da sie im hohen Maße von Umweltfaktoren abhängig sind. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt seit jeher auf der Suche nach kausalen ökologischen Mechanismen, die Verbreitungs- und Abundanzmuster in Abhängigkeit von Umweltfaktoren bestimmen. Wir nutzen die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse, um Zukunftsprognosen zu erstellen und uns im internationalen Naturschutz zu engagieren.
