Forschungsinteressen

In Anbetracht der weltweiten Biodiversitätskriese, die durch den massiven Verlust von Lebensräumen und den vom Menschen verursachten Klimawandel verursacht wird, stehen wir vor großen Herausforderungen, die nur mit Hilfe ökologischer Modellierung bewertet und letztlich bewältigt werden können. Der Verlust der biologischen und genetischen Vielfalt ist bereits in den meisten Biomen der Erde zu beobachten. Zentrale Fragen sind: Was kann die Verbreitung von Arten begrenzen? Wie können Populationen auf Veränderungen reagieren? Welche Anpassungsmechanismen stehen ihnen zur Verfügung? Wie reagieren sie über verschiedene zeitliche und geografische Skalen hinweg, und wie können Vorhersagemodelle berechnet werden, um mögliche zukünftige Entwicklungen vorherzusagen? Die Forschung zu diesen Themen hat sich in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten erheblich intensiviert, ist stark interdisziplinär ausgerichtet und hat viele neue spannende Erkenntnisse hervorgebracht.

Gemeinsam mit meiner Forschungsgruppe untersuche ich die Auswirkungen von Klima- und Landnutzungsänderungen auf verschiedenen Zeitskalen, von derzeit beobachtbaren Arealverschiebungen und eher kurzfristigen Arealdynamiken von (invasiven) Arten (einige Jahre bis Jahrzehnte) bis hin zu evolutionären Anpassungen während der Artbildung (mehrere Millionen Jahre). Unsere bevorzugten Taxa sind Amphibien und Reptilien, die sich aufgrund ihrer hohen Abhängigkeit von Umweltfaktoren besonders gut als Studienorganismen eignen. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt seit jeher auf der Suche nach kausalen ökologischen Mechanismen, die Verbreitungs- und Abundanzmuster in Abhängigkeit von Umweltfaktoren bestimmen. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse nutzen wir, um Zukunftsprognosen zu erstellen.

Im Laufe der Jahre konnten wir das Methodenspektrum deutlich erweitern und mit eigenen Ansätzen optimieren, die speziell für die Bearbeitung komplexer Fragestellungen entwickelt wurden. Dazu gehören verschiedene Techniken der korrelativen, mechanistischen und hybriden Artenverbreitungsmodellierung, der Klimatologie und Fernerkundung, der Paläontologie, der Ökophysiologie/Thermobiologie, der Bewegungsökologie einschließlich der Modellierung der landnutzungsabhängigen Ausbreitung, der Invasionsbiologie, der Aut- und Synöklogie, der Phylo- und Populationsgenetik sowie der angewandten Naturschutzplanung. Zu den selbst entwickelten methodischen Ansätzen gehören z.B. verschiedene Techniken zur Modellierung der Artenverteilung mittels multitemporaler und drohnengestützter Fernerkundungsdaten sowie statistische Methoden zur Quantifizierung von Nischendivergenzmustern. Die betrachteten räumlichen Skalen reichen von der Analyse globaler Muster ganzer Verbreitungsgebiete bis hin zu sehr feinskaligen Analysen einzelner Lebensräume im Bereich von wenigen Zentimetern.

Neben der Nutzung globaler Datenbanken liefert unsere feld- und sammlungsbasierte Forschung oft wichtige Datenbanken für unsere Analysen, für die ich selbst entsprechende Pipelines entwickle (R, Julia, etc.).
