Unsere Aufgabe
Neben den lebenden Tieren im Ausstellungsbereich (Wasser - Leben im Fluss) beherbergt das Museum Koenig auch eine wissenschaftliche Lebendtierhaltung. In modernen Terrarien- und Aquarienanlagen werden niedere Vertebraten (Fische, Amphibien und Reptilien) und verschiedene Wirbellose zu Forschungszwecken gehalten und gezüchtet. Die Haltung von lebenden Tieren ermöglicht Untersuchungen, welche in freier Wildbahn nur schwer durchführbar sind und liefert somit wichtige Erkenntnisse z. B. zu Verhaltens- und Fortpflanzungsbiologie, Larvalentwicklung oder Funktionsmorphologie. Die so gewonnen Informationen unterstützen die sammlungsbasierte Forschung und Feldarbeit zu taxonomischen und evolutionsbiologischen Fragestellungen, helfen aber auch dem Artenschutz indem nützliche Daten für Erhaltungszuchtprogramme oder zum Schutz der natürlichen Populationen erhoben werden.
Fische
Der Fokus der Forschung in den Aquarien liegt auf südostasiatischen Fischen aus Sulawesi. Aktuelle Projekte erforschen die Funktions- und Ökomorphologie einer adaptiven Radiation der Sonnenstrahlfische Sulawesis, speziell deren Kieferapparat und dessen Auswirkung auf die Ernährungsweise, sowie die Evolution der einzigartigen Fortpflanzungsstrategie von Reisfischen, welche mittels Zuchtlinien erkundet wird.
Frösche
Bei den Amphibien liegt der Forschungsschwerpunkt auf der Entwicklungsbiologie tropischer Frösche, deren Larvalentwicklung, vergleichender Larvalmorphologie und Bioakustik.
