Prof. Dr. Christoph Scherber ist Professor für Biodiversitätsmonitoring an der Universität Bonn und Leiter des Zentrums für Biodiversitätsmonitoring und Naturschutzforschung (zbm), sowie Stellvertretender LIB-Generaldirektor am Bonner Standort des Leibniz-Institut zur Analyse des Biodiversitätswandels.
Ein zentrales Thema seiner Forschung ist die Vielfalt des Lebens auf der Erde („Biodiversität“). Dabei gilt sein besonderes Interesse den Auswirkungen von Veränderungen der Biodiversität auf Ökosystemprozesse wie Pflanzen-Insekten-Wechselwirkungen und Pflanzenfraß sowie der Frage, wie dem Verlust an Biodiversität entgegengewirkt werden kann.
Darüber hinaus untersucht Christoph Scherber anthropogene Umweltveränderungen (z. B. Klimawandel, Landnutzungsänderungen, Ressourcenausbeutung und invasive Arten) in einer Vielzahl von Ökosystemen wie Grasland, Ackerland, Heide, Wäldern und Torfmooren, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf Europa liegt, zunehmend aber auch auf anderen Teilen der Welt. Dabei werden insbesondere theoriegeleitete Feldversuche auf Parzellenebene mit Anwendungen im Naturschutz auf Landschaftsebene kombiniert.
Ein wichtiges Ziel ist es, den Verlust der biologischen Vielfalt aufzuhalten und gemeinsam mit Akteuren wie Landwirten oder Partnern aus der Industrie die Kurve wieder nach oben zu lenken.Das Zentrum für Biodiversitätsmonitoring und Naturschutzforschung (zbm) am Leibniz-Institut zur Analyse des Biodiversitätswandels untersucht die Ursachen und Folgen des globalen Rückgangs der biologischen Vielfalt und entwickelt wissenschaftlich fundierte Strategien zu ihrem Schutz. Vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender menschlicher Einflüsse wie Landnutzungsänderungen, Umweltverschmutzung, invasive Arten und Klimawandel erforschen die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler des zbm Veränderungen von Ökosystemen in Wiesen und Agrarlandschaften, Mooren, Wäldern und Heidegebieten.
Durch experimentelle Ansätze, automatisierte Methoden der Arterfassung sowie moderne molekulare Verfahren wie DNA-Metabarcoding analysiert das Zentrum Wechselwirkungen zwischen Landnutzung, Pflanzen und Tieren. Mithilfe statistischer Modelle identifizieren die Forschenden langfristige Trends und zentrale Treiber des Artenrückgangs. Dabei verbinden sie theoriegeleitete Experimente im kleinen Maßstab mit Anwendungen auf Landschaftsebene und integrieren Daten aus angrenzenden Disziplinen wie Mineralogie und Geologie-Paläontologie.
Ein zentrales Ziel des zbm ist die Überführung wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse in konkrete Handlungsoptionen. Mit evidenzbasierten Lösungsansätzen für Naturschutz und nachhaltige Ressourcennutzung steht das Zentrum im aktiven Austausch mit Klimaforschung, Politik, NGOs sowie Akteurinnen und Akteuren aus Agrar- und Umweltpraxis.
