Research interests

In view of the global biodiversity crisis caused by the massive loss of habitats and man-made climate change, we are facing major challenges that can only be assessed and ultimately overcome with the help of ecological modelling. The loss of biological and genetic diversity can already be observed in most of the world's biomes. The central questions are: What can limit the spread of species? How can populations react to changes? What adaptation mechanisms are available to them? How do they react across different temporal and geographical scales, and how can predictive models be calculated to forecast possible future developments? Research on these topics has intensified considerably over the last two decades, has a strong interdisciplinary focus and has produced many exciting new findings.

Together with my research group, I am investigating the effects of climate and land-use changes on different time scales, from currently observable range shifts and rather short-term range dynamics of (invasive) species (several years to decades) to evolutionary adaptations during speciation (several million years). Our favoured taxa are amphibians and reptiles, which are particularly suitable as study organisms due to their high dependence on environmental factors. We have always focussed on the search for causal ecological mechanisms that determine distribution and abundance patterns in relation to environmental factors. We use the knowledge gained to make predictions for the future.

Over the years, we have been able to significantly expand the range of methods and optimise them with our own approaches, which have been specially developed for dealing with complex issues. These include various techniques of correlative, mechanistic and hybrid species distribution modelling, climatology and remote sensing, palaeontology, ecophysiology/thermobiology, movement ecology including the modelling of land-use-dependent dispersal, invasion biology, auto- and synoecology, phylo- and population genetics and applied nature conservation planning. The methodological approaches developed in-house include, for example, various techniques for modelling species distribution using multitemporal and drone-based remote sensing data as well as statistical methods for quantifying niche divergence patterns. The spatial scales considered range from the analysis of global patterns of entire distribution areas to very fine-scale analyses of individual habitats in the range of a few centimetres.

In addition to the use of global databases, our field- and collection-based research often provides important databases for our analyses, for which I develop appropriate pipelines myself (R, Julia, etc.).
