Every year, more than 100,000 people visit our exhibitions. But how is a museum experience actually created? The exhibition series ‘The Museum Makers’ , running from 13 October 2026 in the ‘Focus Exhibition’, invites you to take a look behind the scenes. It opens up sensory worlds of experience and traces the journey from the initial idea to the opening of an exhibition.
Exhibitions are far more than simply a display of objects. They arise from the interplay of research, conceptualisation, design and craftsmanship. The focus is on the exhibits – each with its own story. How are they selected? What stories do they tell? A fossil, a taxidermied animal or a mineral not only conveys scientific knowledge, but can also evoke memories, trigger emotions or bring the history of collecting to life.
The exhibition also shows how design influences the way we view objects. Light, colours, materials and media create an atmosphere, direct our attention and provide guidance. At the same time, exhibitions must be designed in such a way that they are accessible and engaging for as many people as possible.
This exhibition about exhibitions invites visitors to change their perspective, discover objects with all their senses and develop their own ideas for exhibitions. Admission is free.
