Imaging Lab, Hamburg

Equipment

To study the detailed morphology and anatomy of various animal and plant groups, as well as to digitize the LIB's extensive collection of objects—including fish, snails, rocks, and minerals—the imaging laboratory offers a range of imaging systems.

BK Plus Lab System

This digital imaging system features a wide magnification range. It is equipped with a Canon EOS 5 Mark III camera and three lenses (35 mm, 65 mm, and 100 mm) that facilitate imaging of a variety of specimens, ranging from macro photography for sizes between 2 mm and over 200 mm. Additionally, the system can capture images of specimens smaller than 2 mm using three microscope lenses (5x, 10x, and 20x). The camera system operates on a vertical lift, allowing for the creation of focus-stacked images.

Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

The Hitachi tabletop microscope, referred to as SEM TM4000, enables high-resolution imaging of small samples. This system is ideal for studying intricate structures or small animals, with magnification capabilities ranging from 25x to 250,000x. Notably, the desktop SEM does not require a coating for the specimens, making it both user-friendly and environmentally sustainable.
