We explore nature from different perspectives in order to understand and preserve its diversity.

Our four research centres work closely together: We discover and describe species, analyse their genetic basis, research ecological interactions and develop new ways of sharing knowledge. With our collections, laboratories and technical rooms, we create the basis for excellent research - and with our exhibitions, we create spaces for encounters between humans and nature.

Centre for Taxonomy and Morphology

In order to understand the evolution of life, species are discovered, described, differentiated and characterised.

Centre for Molecular Biodiversity Research

Genetic and genomic information is sequenced and analysed here.

Centre for Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation Research

We analyse the interactions between land use and plants and animals.

Centre for knowledge transfer

We create spaces for encounters between people and nature in exhibitions and educational programmes.

Bridge professorships

We are forging close links with our partner universities in Hamburg and Bonn.
