Our Guiding Principle

We explore nature to inspire the future

Driven by our deep fascination with the diversity of nature on Earth, we recognise the critical importance of biodiversity for the well-being of all. We share our passion for nature by collaborating with people across many disciplines and from all parts of society. In this way, we create a unique space to inspire and appreciate this diversity. With our significant collections, our cutting-edge research, our inspiring exhibitions and encounters, we help protect nature for future generations.

Who we are

We are a vibrant research museum where  science, knowledge, society and a fascination for nature come together.

What we do

We measure, document, and analyse nature to understand and interpret biodiversity patterns across space and time. Our work transcends science: it is an invitation to everyone - whether visitors, researchers or decision-makers - to enter into dialogue. With every discovery, every project and every conversation, we actively shape the future of nature in our society.

How we work

Our work is based on four principles:

Discover - We explore the world and our collections to document biodiversity and discover new connections.
Understand - We study the evolution of biodiversity and the causes of its change in order to understand its past and future  importance.
Share - The key to our success is sharing our knowledge so that information can be experienced and understood:
Act - We work with people in an interdisciplinary and practical way to find solutions.

How we deal with each other

Clarity and trust: We share information and processes openly and invite those involved to help shape decisions.
Respect and appreciation: We treat each other responsibly and empathetically and promote a culture of constructive dialogue. Our diversity is our strength.
Credibility and responsibility: We keep our word and we reflect on ourselves regularly. For us, responsibility means being honest in our thoughts and actions.

Out contribution

Using our research, connecting disciplines and communities, we develop solutions for a sustainable future, share knowledge and celebrate the wonders of life on Earth.
