The Board of Trustees of the LIB supervises in accordance with the current statutes the legality, expediency and economic efficiency of the foundation's activities. It has a comprehensive right to information.
In accordance with Section 6 (1) of the LIB Foundation Act, the Foundation Board consists of one representative each from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the Federal Government, the University of Bonn and the University of Hamburg.
The Board of Trustees also includes up to six further members. They are appointed by the Ministry responsible for research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in agreement with the Ministry responsible for research of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Ministry responsible for research of the Federal Government. These persons should be particularly suited to support the tasks of the Foundation Council. When appointing them, the Act on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia of 9 November 1999 (GV. NRW. p. 590), as amended, must be observed.
Staffing (June 2024):
The Chairman of the LIB Foundation Board is Dr Michael H. Wappelhorst, Head of Division at the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Deputy Chairman is Dr Sandro Holzheimer, Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Dr Rolf Greve, Senate Director of the Ministry of Science, Research, Equality and Districts of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
Prof. Dr Tilo Böhmann, representative of the University of Hamburg.
Prof. Dr Dr.h.c. Michael Hoch, Rector of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.
