With its new YouTube playlist “LIBelle”, the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB) is expanding its science communication to include a visual format specifically aimed at a younger audience: through short, entertaining reports, insights and accompanying short films, current research topics are presented in a clear and engaging way.
The series takes viewers to places where research comes to life: to farmland, collections and laboratories, or to extraordinary sites. It focuses on issues relating to biodiversity, species diversity and changes to our environment, as well as potential solutions.
The first videos are already online: one episode follows a project on natural pest control at a farm in North Rhine-Westphalia. Another episode focuses on an extraordinary discovery: in 2023, a meteorite struck Elmshorn, making it one of the most significant finds in Germany in recent decades.
In addition, short video clips (shorts) offer concise insights and encourage viewers to join in the discussion or take a closer look.
A preview of the upcoming episodes highlights the wide range of topics covered by the series:
How do new animal species arise? How can ants contribute to the development of medical instruments? And what is the real story behind the ‘world’s most venomous spider’?
The series is being produced in collaboration with the Filmpeek production team and stems from a partnership with the University of Europe for Applied Sciences (UE) in Hamburg, where the Filmpeek team were students. The format was further developed jointly from the student project.
More episodes are already in the pipeline and will be released in the coming weeks.
