"We only have this one planet - let's preserve nature together!" With this message, the interactive exhibition "PLANET A* - The exhibition for *species diversity" aims to inspire young people in particular to reflect and act. From 7 May, six stations at the Museum der Natur Hamburg will show how everyone can make a contribution to nature conservation in their everyday lives.
The travelling exhibition provides a concise and striking illustration of what makes biodiversity unique and what jeopardises it. It invites visitors to learn about key facts in the cycle of nature and to marvel at and discuss their direct effect on our lives. After all, who has any idea that a single tree can store around 683 kilograms of carbon and filter around 18,000 litres of water per year, equivalent to 2,700 euros?
"PLANET A* - The exhibition for *species diversity" spans the spectrum from our own consumer behaviour to EU measures for nature conservation and international agreements. The exhibition describes the changes that would be necessary in agriculture, forests and cities in order to preserve this biodiversity, for example through different structures in fields and unsealed surfaces in cities.
However, visitors do not remain in the role of spectators: They become actors at various points. It quickly becomes clear that joint action in politics, business, science and society is the key to preserving nature.
Biodiversity is crucial for the preservation of healthy ecosystems that provide services such as clean air, clear water and fertile soils. However, biodiversity is in sharp decline due to human impact. Our basis of life is under threat. According to the current "Red List", around a third of the 48,000 animal species, 9,500 plant species and 14,400 fungi species in Germany alone are endangered.
The interactive travelling exhibition is a project of the Research Initiative for the Conservation of Biodiversity (FEdA), which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education, Research, Technology and Space, and was developed in collaboration with the Senckenberg Nature Museum in Frankfurt.
