Face of the LIB: Oriana Wojewski-Yelle

Oriana Wojewski–Yelle
Museum Koenig Bonn Faces of the LIB

"At Museum Koenig, I can get involved in the "good cause" in a new way, for example by actively supporting our researchers in nature conservation and biodiversity topics."

Oriana Wojewski-Yelle is learning how to communicate innovative research with exciting events at Museum Koenig. She is training as an event organiser at the LIB site in Bonn. Here she supports the "Press and Communication" team in the organisation and implementation of a wide variety of event formats - currently with a focus on public relations. Both privately and professionally, she enjoys being around people and - when she's not working - loves travelling.

She answers our questions in the new edition of our "Faces of LIB" series. Each month, a personality who makes their own individual contribution to the success of LIB at the Bonn or Hamburg locations will have their say.

What have you learnt so far during your training?

Due to the special circumstances, unfortunately no events have been able to take place in person since I started - only digitally. In this situation, it was important to respond flexibly to the circumstances and find new event formats. I'm also involved in social media for the LIB Bonn location: I post information about scientific articles, news about press releases or from the museum. It was also really exciting to see how the LIB location in Hamburg grew together with us. I experienced at first hand the complicated processes required to successfully merge two locations.

What brought you to the LIB Museum Koenig?

I loved going to the Museum Koenig as a child and have fond memories of it. The variety of different tasks has now prompted me to start my career here: from exhibition openings and press events to seminars and lectures, I found it appealing to realise these different formats for all people - young and old alike. The museum also offers me a wide range of topics in terms of content: Whether scientific, political or social - I also find my personal interests reflected here. For each event, I adapt to new people, familiarise myself with new topics and accompany it holistically from start to finish - these are my personal highlights during my training so far.

Where is your favourite place in the museum?

I like the "Savannah" part of the exhibition best: located in the centre of the museum, you can hear not only the animal sounds of the savannah itself, but also the rainforest sounds of the neighbouring area. This creates a very special atmosphere from which you can take in everything that is happening in the museum. There is still a lot for me to discover beyond the museum: I hope to be able to take another look at the laboratories and collection rooms in the future. A lot of things were difficult to access during the pandemic.

Where is your favourite place in nature?

That's not easy for me to answer: I like to go hiking in my free time - whether it's on the coast or in the mountains. When planning my holidays, I'm drawn to places in the world that offer the most unspoilt nature possible. For example, I was travelling in the Jordanian desert and was deeply impressed by the clear starry sky and the silence. I was also mesmerised by the fresh air, the clear waters and the dense vegetation of the Slovenian forests.

Do you have a favourite animal?

Orcas are highly intelligent with a distinctive social behaviour, but also a sophisticated hunting strategy. Nevertheless, they are threatened with extinction and must be actively protected. The fact that researchers here at Museum Koenig are committed to biodiversity and trying to ensure the survival of endangered species is an area that I wholeheartedly support.

What brought you to Museum Koenig?

During my school education, I worked in the catering industry for several years. This is where I learnt how to professionally manage an event. This led me to pursue this career path as well. Within an aid organisation, I also volunteer at festivals, for example, where I provide medical care to people in need: Organising and implementing operations and working with the organisers - that's how I discovered that I enjoy planning as well as having a talent for it. At Museum Koenig, I can get involved in the "good cause" in a new way, for example by actively supporting our researchers with nature conservation and biodiversity topics.

What plans would you like to pursue in the future?

I'm currently still very happy with my tasks here: my career path at the LIB is already mapped out for the next two years and I'm looking forward to being able to come into personal contact with people again. I'm also looking forward to being able to organise events with larger groups of people again. After that, I could imagine studying. But I don't know exactly what yet. But I definitely want to continue working in a creative environment like the one offered to me here at Museum Koenig. In my private life, I would like to continue travelling and getting to know the world. I'd even like to combine my passion for travelling with my job - I'm excited to see what else life has in store for me.
