What do endangered angel sharks near Tenerife, tiny deep-sea crabs, coral reefs in the Pacific and one of Germany’s largest collections of crustaceans have in common? They all tell stories of how research, collections and international cooperation are helping us to better understand changes in biodiversity.

The second issue of LIB Magazine is coming out on 10 June. Under the theme ‘Together’, the magazine highlights how researchers at the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of  Biodiversity Change (LIB) are working together with partners from research, politics, culture and society to find solutions to the challenges posed by biodiversity change.

Among other things, the magazine follows researchers working to protect angel sharks in the Canary Islands, provides insights into research into little-known deep-sea organisms, and shows how genetic early-warning systems can help to better protect coral reefs. Other articles focus on the largest expansion of the LIB’s crustacean collection in the past 100 years, the role of biodiversity data in nature conservation, plans for a new natural history museum in Hamburg, and the One Health approach. This approach views the health of humans, animals and the environment as inextricably linked.

The big questions surrounding changes in biodiversity can only be answered by bringing together different perspectives: the new LIB magazine combines the latest research with the people behind the projects, showing how knowledge is generated, shared and developed collaboratively.

LIB Magazine is available free of charge. The digital edition is available on the LIB website. The printed edition can be ordered free of charge by emailing magazin@leibniz-lib.de. In future, the topics covered in the magazine will also be explored in greater depth through accompanying events and discussion forums.
