Description of the

The availability of high quality samples for molecular research requires the development of standardised methods for the collection, handling, storage, retrieval and distribution of samples.

Biobanks as providers of molecular samples should endeavour to integrate new technologies and state-of-the-art scientific approaches to ensure the availability of fit-for-purpose research samples.

ISBER, the International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories, is continuously working on a set of best practices that provide guidance for the development and management of biobanks. The ISBER Best Practices for Repositories are often considered the canonical, overarching reference for biobank management (etc.).

LIB Biobank staff have contributed to the last three editions of ISBER Best Practices, sometimes in the role of co-editors or special advisors.
