Description of the
New Caledonia is an archipelago in the South Pacific, belonging to France. Due to its geographical isolation, the fauna and flora of New Caledonia have a high degree of endemism.
In collaboration with Philippe Bouchet of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris, we are studying a little-known radiation of carnivorous Rhytididae from New Caledonia. We have already delimited more than 50 species, less than half of which were previously known. We will investigate the phylogeny of the group using molecular methods, also as a basis for a revised delimitation of the genera of the New Caledonian Rhytididae. Based on the new knowledge of the systematics and distribution of rhytidids and data on other snail groups, we will analyse the factors that determine the distribution and endemism of land snails in New Caledonia.
