On 2 May, Leibniz President Martina Brockmeier also visited the LIB, Museum Koenig in Bonn on her tour of various Leibniz institutions. She was accompanied by the newly appointed Life Sciences Officer for the Leibniz Association, Gitta Heinz. During the visit, there was a guided tour of our permanent exhibition “Life is Diversity” and one of the scientific collections.

The permanent exhibition inspired our president with its unique concept of showing exhibits in their natural habitat – spectacularly realistically staged. The recently completed part “Rainforest – the Canopy” was appreciated in detail. During the tour and the talks, we also gave insights into the collection and the research work of the LIB, including a demonstration on the 3D insect scanner. Furthermore, a selection of current research projects and plans were presented: the Caucasus Barcode of Life project (CaBOL), the FörTax – project to promote taxonomic knowledge as a basis for nature conservation and the EU Horizon project BioMonitor4CAP, a Europe-wide project for biodiversity monitoring in agricultural landscapes.

In the discussion that followed, we were able to find numerous commonalities with the office in positions on the urgency of more biodiversity research or the necessary expansion of a central, open collection and research infrastructure and assure ourselves of Martina Brockmeier’s support.

Our Treasure of the Month: The Larva of the Antlion

Before it spends just a few days in its adult form flying around to mate, it lives about two years in its larval stage – commonly known as the Antlion. What makes this treasure so valuable to our researchers is the unique structure of its jaws, which they have closely examined in a recent study.
