Questionnaire: Birgit Klasen

Your Title, Name, Place of work?
Dipl.-Biologin Birgit Klasen, Bonn

What is your current position/function at our institute?
Research Assistant in the project NFDI4Biodiversity – Biodiversity, Ecology and Environmental Data; Section Biodiversity Informatics

What do you like about your job/position?
The work is incredibly diverse and fascinating. In biodiversity informatics, you sit at the transition from classical science to the digital world and have an insight into all research areas of our institute. The data generated are the foundation of science and I can help scientists, the interested public and politicians to use them.

Can you please describe your tasks at the LIB?
Scientific data are a valuable resource and I am committed to ensuring that they are sustainably available to all people. This includes collecting, archiving and publishing the data as well as building national and international networks and structures to make this possible. We want to make all scientific data available to everyone according to the so-called FAIR principles (FAIR stands for findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable).

Is there something about the Institute that particularly appeals to you?
I especially like that at our institute the most diverse fields come together and can benefit and learn from each other: different disciplines of science, historical and current collections, and the museum with visitors of all ages. Therefore, we can learn from the past for the future and make the world a somewhat better place.
