Book release: The puku antelope
A look at the book “Die Puku-Antilope” © Vera Rduch
The latest volume on the puku antelope (book in German language) joins the prestigious reference books of the Neue Brehm Bücherei. The first book by Dr Vera Rduch, mammalogist and expert on ungulates at the Leibniz Institute for Biodiversity Change Analysis, Museum Koenig Bonn, presents comprehensively and in detail what has been observed and researched since the first mention of pukus by David Livingstone in 1857. Current and important findings from research are a great asset for understanding the biology of pukus. Habitat, food spectrum, territoriality or relationships, for example, are as well the subject of the book as life in the savannah or current threats. Unfortunately, the population of these animals, which are not only beautiful but also fascinating in their mode of life, is increasingly endangered.
Anyone who writes for the Neue Brehm Bücherei has proven expertise in the relevant animal species. This cutting-edge monograph deals with the puku antelope (Kobus vardonii) and is another volume in the popular series published by VerlagsKG Wolf. Vera Rduch has been working with this antelope species, native to south-central Africa, since 2007 and has contributed greatly to its understanding. However, this book does not only present her own results. It goes far beyond that and presents in detail the knowledge around this antelope itself and the interconnections in its habitat – which required an in-depth and meticulous research work by Vera Rduch.
The effort was worth it: the perhaps inconspicuous, even boring puku antelope at first sight becomes very excitingly fascinating in the light of the overall presentation. Besides: who wouldn’t immediately start dreaming a little when just looking at the pictures – by the way, with a few exceptions all taken by Vera Rduch – of these simply wonderful animals of the impressive landscape of their habitats.
